Its on Co-Op mobile. I phoned them up asking if I'd loose my credit if i didn't use it, they said as long as it doesn't go 12 months without a chargeable action (such as a call/text) then the account is kept live and credit doesn't expire. If it goes 12 months without anything they they would cut it off.
At 8p/min and 4p texts I occasionally send my main mobile a text to keep it going.

This Alcatel is free, but you have to buy a £10 top up, I got my Dad one and swapped the sim card to a cheap Pay-as-you-go sim after he had used the £10 top up.

I've upgraded to a J5 and thought about using it still as a bike phone but I decided against swapping the SIM back and forth.

Many thanks for all the replies and suggestions. On balance, I'm going to invest in a larger saddle bag so I can fit my phone in there (inside a waterproof bag) rather than having it in my back pocket. Cheers.
