Yep Kirstie, that's pretty much what white coat hypertension is.

And also partly the source of my confusion. I mean, BP varies naturally and greatly during the course of the day and is influenced by any number of factors. BP is expected to ping around. So if one feels fine all the time, how is one to know what point in this natural fluctuation is the norm? The average of high and low?

I guess all one can do is ignore the single reading, monitor it over a period and then look at some kind of trend and try to interpret in relation with other factors.

Perhaps a high BP isn't so much a problem but simply a natural function that leads to other bits wearing out sooner. We want to live longer so don't wont bits wearing out! A bicycle tyre's mileage is supposedly, say, x thousand km but any number of to be expected factors can actually stop it getting there!
