British Cycling launches “Sofa to saddle”

Oop north we made our ‘Couch’ out of old pallets. So in my case it would be Pallet to Pedal.😂

On a more serious note ….people change either through aspiration or fear. Aspiration is much more durable change whereas change thru fear slows down as soon as the threat is perceived to be gone - or tolerable.

Society will never frighten the population into action….will they?

yep exactly that, the couch to 10k in running has been very popular and, I hate terms like this btw,but in promoter speak "activating" new runners into their sport.

For cycling and we can debate again whether this is really in the remit of British Cycling, because really theyre a national governance board of the sporting side, not a recreational cycling body, though theres obviously cross over and influence and government funding that blurs the lines, and its an argument thats been raging for 30 years so not about to be solved.

but its literally well why cant we do something like that too and get people into cycling that way, its almost one of those how has it taken so long to recognise its something they could do.

I thought it was a bit odd to send it to BC members, rather than as a please share this with non members prompting, as being members arent we already likely to be cycling beyond sofa level...but I might sign up just to see what its about.

I liked the faq though
Why is British Cycling spending money on this?
• British Cycling’s purpose is to Bring the joy of cycling to everyone. This means
addressing issues around inequalities and accessibility for more people – some of
whom may wish to be our regular participants, volunteers, club members of the
future. We also thank the generous partnership with Lloyds for making the funding
of this programme possible

nice answer there chatgpt ;)

I think they are more than just the national governance board of the sporting side. THat is the largest part of their remit, but there is more than that to them.

theyve claimed alot of that landscape, and there is dispute on the ownership shall we say, there are alot of cycling organisations, some still even embittered by the whole merger that took place nearly 70 years ago  that disagree that its really in their remit to go beyond simply being governance of the sport.

I mean British Cycling was reformed in the 90s with almost an exclusive focus on winning track cycling gold medals, that has largely been to the detriment of any other aspect of the sport, the BMX and CX orgs that got subsumed into BC as part of that would give you chapter and verse on that.

yet they had no choice as funding from government via the lottery/UK sport was exclusive towards BC. and certainly any focus on cycling in Britain as a recreational or just non sporting context, then Cycling UK or the old CTC would always claim they were the rightful platform and voice, in the 90s BC were nowhere near any of that stuff.

but you start getting success, and you can promote the stars of track cycling and then governments or their NGOs start giving you more money because you can promote cycling as a thing via them, and suddenly you are claiming to be responsible for getting a million people to ride bicycles as your target. and the other orgs who dont have the stars, or the promotion effect or the money get left by the wayside as BC suddenly claim their remit is much wider simply because theyve acquired the money to claim they do.

I wonder how many takers this scheme will attract? An awful lot of people might think a couch is just another variety of potato. Leading to a cry of "who wants some chips?" (Mmm chips) rather than "who wants to go for a bike ride?". A bit counter productive.

What's in a name? I've always called it a settee myself. Mind you, when it comes to choc bars, the very same bar when called a Marathon was a lot more appealing to me than something called a Snickers, which feels like some sort of Americanism.

Yes, Snickers bars are American.
