I went to see the specialist/consultant yesterday. He told me that the hip is holding up and it's so far so good. In case you don't know,i was knocked off my bike 4 weeks ago by a fellow cyclist. The impact caused a bit of my ball joint to break away. They pondered over pinning it but said the anesthetic and the risk of infection made them decide to leave it and see how it mends. The consultant also said yesterday that if they'd pinned it and it didn't hold, the pin would go into my pelvis causing a serious problem, So i just have to avoid weight baring as much as possible and see if it heals. He also said that if the blood supply to the area cuts off i'll start to feel pain and if that happens i have to make my way to the fracture unit ASAP. He said that would mean me needing a new hip. I was talking to a carer yesterday who tends to a bloke with a hip replacement. She said his had become infected and needed a different type of false hip. The false hip option doesn't sound too good but if it's needed i'll have to have it!

Sounds like there should be a poll on this thread....
  1. Carbon hip
  2. Stainless steel hip
  3. Titanium hip
  4. Ceramic composite hip
  5. Bovine implant hip
  6. Hip hop

This sounds interesting. Let rip. I've always wondered why artificial joints have such a limited life.
Oooh it's been a while. Basically the most important aspect of short term success and life is in the operation. Specialist centres, specialist surgeons, ultra clean environments. Any debris in the acetabular cup will quickly score the head and the cup. Long term is all about transfer of material and the resulting friction build up. Picking the right materials, getting the design right for the forces involved and the angle of those forces is the key to long life. Titanium and PTFE were particularly bad for adhesive wear, leading to polymer transfer between surfaces, roughened counterface, abrasive wear, replacement in a few years and that's about all I remember.

Some do wear worse. Not sure which my brother in law has, but he's early 40's and had his replaced mid 30's due to a degenerative condition. He was warned to leave it as long as possible as they last about 10 years and he'd need about 3 or more due to his age. He waited as long as he could. He is doing well now though. Golfing and a bit of cycling. He is a bit precious about it, and I told him cycling would build up the muscles in his legs without impact. A lady I used to work with, her husband had had both done and was into his climbing !

A poor attempt at humour seeing as it's a serious subject. What's even more sad is that 8 others find your attempt funny!
No offense intended. IMO if you can't laugh at life and misfortune then you will be miserable and bitter. I have met people like that and I'd rather laugh about things. Let's face it, nobody's died (yet)!
