If one purchases a bike online after only guesstimating the size, puts it together and then finds it too small/big, what then happens? Is one allowed to put it back in the box and return it, or is one stuck with a bike that don't fit proper?

For online purchases which are not faulty but are just the wrong size or maybe you just don't like it you have a seven day "cooling off" period. You must return it within that time.
Check the sellers T & Cs. They may charge you for carriage.

Thanls for the clarification. It would be from Wheelbase.

I have done a fair bit of research and am fairly confident it'll be the correct size, but have no way of trying one out, as no bike shop nearby has one. Wheelbase are in the Lake District and I'm in Wiltshire, so that's a long trip to go have a look! I have found one or two others thay have the bike in stock, but they're oop north, too...

As @Cycleops says distance selling regs mean you have 7 days to send it back though if it's not faulty, ect it's normal at your cost. See what they say
Paypal do offer to pay for you back for your returns so maybe a option to stop you being out of pocket.

My LBS does a "fit and build" service for fifty quid. They get you in for a basic bike fit to determine the right size then you order your bike online and get it delivered to them. When it arrives they build it up for you. If I'd known about it before I would have used it, seems like a good idea... might be worth asking your LBS if they have a similar service.

This will possibly be a mid £2000s purchase if I can't negotiate any discount, so I dread to think what Paypal will charge me in fees!

What do the specific retailer Ts & Cs say?

Phone them before ordering. Get in writing in follow up email

Good afternoon

Nowadays it is the consumer contracts regulations 2013, as of Jun 2014 that governs returns period and this is 14 days after receipt of goods.

Yes you can return an item just because you feel like it.

BUT The supplier can charge you for "Excessive handling" which basically means more handling that you would have been allowed in the shop or any damage that you have caused.:excl:

Most bike shops wouldn't allow you to assemble a bike so this example seems like excessive handling to me unless the sites T&Cs say otherwise.

I don't see how that would work, if you are returning it because the fit is wrong, provided it is in as new condition then there should be no problem. This is no different from trying on clothes and returning them. If the bike was scuffed and scratched, then yes, I could see an argument for excessive handling, but assembling a bike is the minimal necessary to determine usefulness.

Can’t you buy locally to save the hassle?

Nope. It's a 2018 model and no LBS has one. Primera in Bournemouth still have it on their website at a discounted price, despite them having zero stock and me whinging about them doing so. My nearest dealer has looked on the system and there are none at the distributor's. Hence I am resorting to mail order...

ETA: there won't be a 2019 model available btw.

Nowhere else with the same frame in correct size even if diff spec or where’s the mail order, can you travel? I would for 2k (indeed I did several times in my Ti quest to Sussex, Norfolk and N Yorks)

It's a bit naughty to try out a bike in a LBS purely so you can buy it cheaper elsewhere. Maybe I'm being a bit old-fashioned.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Ring them up and discuss things - the size and their returns policy. They claim to be mail order specialists so returns are probably not unknown!
I know it's along way but if spending that much I'd take the trip up there. I went a similar distance up to Ribble a few years go to check out their bikes and had a basic jig-fitting in the shop (as was then), before ordering online.

I wouldn't do that either. I merely meant that no LBSs had the bike in stock, so I can't try it for sizing. If a LBS had the bike I'd buy it from them. Well, maybe I'd do it at Primera to pay them back for their dodgy, underhand marketing tactics!

This was the online ad I originally responded to: http://www.primera-sports.com/focus-2018-mares-rival-1-cyclocross-bike.html

They said we have no stock at all, but we can sell you a Cannondale with a lower spec for £2500
