Hi all the chap next door regularly runs 2 miles, today it took him 19 mins.
What speed would that make his running??
Its actually a tad over 2 miles but im sure he could factor that in (roughly)

6 mph or thereabouts. Not that fast, but not stupidly slow either.

(19 minutes is about a third of an hour, so multiply 2 miles by three to get the number of miles he could do in an hour)

For things like this just use "avg speed calculator".

2 miles completed in 19 minutes:
6.3157 mph
10.1642 kmh
2.8234 meters/sec
555.7894 feet/minute

2 miles in 19 minutes = 1 mile in 9.5 minutes. Divided 60 (minutes) by 9.5 = 6.3157894 MPH

Has it come to this, that someone couldn't see how to work this out? Someone who presumably, has a computer which will have a calculator in the software, in case they needed precision....

(in addition to the methods above, divide 2 miles by 19, to get MPMinute, then multiply by 60 for MPH....)

Ran up a 1-mile hill at 4 mph then back down at 8mph.

In my running days we never thought in terms of MPH but minute miles. For example we would average 7 minute mile pace and everyone could relate to that.

It's not a bad pace, but it depends how hard hes running too. He'd probably find he ran faster if he were running with others in a club or race.

1 mile at 4mph = 15mins
1 mile at 8mph = 7.5mins
2 mile total = 22.5 ~5.5mph

Not picking holes, I just find it interesting that it doesn't average out like you would think. The slower parts of a run or cycle really pulls the average speed down

The thing that confuses my brain with average speeds is..
10 miles @ 10mph takes 1 hour
10 miles @ 12mph takes 50mins
so you'd think 11mph would be 55 mins, but...
60/11*10 = 54.54 or 54:33
