I admit to being old and I drive probably about 5000 miles per annum. My premium with max no claims was about £1000 last year for a bog standard Peugeot Partner 1.6 turbo diesel. Due to age most companies will not even quote so I am being ripped off but cannot find an alternative.
how old is old? My parents (aged 75 and 78) insured their car (Kia Venga) for under £600 FC in Surrey and that’s with a couple of fault claims in the past few years (About 3k miles)
Maybe your post code is the issue?

That seems steep. I paid £230 this year. 2016 Renault Captur 1.5dci. Fully Comp. Self and Wife driving (ages 72, 73 respectively), 60%ncd. 5000 miles per annum. Excess is £200. Windscreen Excess £100. Car is parked on drive, at home address. We live in an urban area, not the Bronx, but, nor is a garden paradise. Insurer is Aviva. Got it via comparison site (GoCompare, I think, but, not sure).

I don't think my post code is an issue. Your parents are quite young by my standards. I used to be a named driver on my son's car but when he last renewed the insurance the company declined my name due to age.

The renewal price went from about £600 to about £1000 over two years. Nobody will quote me online and when I phone they say they decline to quote due to age. Got me by the short and curlies as i cannot change company for this reason. A Motorhome specialist seemed more reasonable but I have now sold this and they would not accept a change to a car.

I think the idea is that you're supposed to be in a home with a bus pass and talking about your experiences with Jerry...

Chuck a middle aged woman on as a driver. Quotes are done on algorithms and this addition will usually bring the price down. Obviously if you cant get a quote to begin with this might not help.

Havn't got any middle aged women handy I am sorry to say but it would make no difference as they would still not accept me. I think 80 is the magic figure but Camping and Caravan Club refused to quote over 75.

Yet my uncle & father now both in their 90's used the Camping & Caravan Club travel insurance up to a couple of years ago as they didn't stop insuring them to travel at 80

Yes but they were probably already insured with them before turning 80 so allowed to continue. They will not quote for new business unless they have recently changed policy which I doubt.

Stay clear of OneCall insurance, i got well and truly fleeced. Just changed car and they wanted +£400 and its a lower insurance group. Oh, original premium was £900!!
Decided to cut my losses, cancelled and got new 12 mth policy for £590. Seriously thinking of reporting them, but what good would that do? They took over £100 in cancellation fees and some other random made-up bullsh*t.

Admin and cancellation fees are only supposed to reflect the cost of the admin, and are not supposed to be used as a gratuitous profit generating stream. Write a complaint to the financial ombudsman.

We all know the way it works, allow them to renew automatically and you willwittingly or unwittingly pay a premium for the pleasure / slothlessness / indifference.
Mines due next month...I only have what I think is a modest car, 2015 Astra SRI,not that powerful, mediocre but reliable and quite comfortable and cheap to buy.
Renew with Hastings...its going up around £100 to £633 for fully comp, no claims protected blah blah blah...jesus, I'm 61, yeah i did have a no fault claim a couple years ago, roadside parking, no convictions, it really ought to be cheaper than that for what I think is a relatively ow risk package.

Did the work tonight, Direct Line came through at a smidgen one £300....yay, less than half price.

Shop around, you know it makes sense, I'm now over £30 a month better off.

Curiously, I've just gone in the reverse direction.

Renewal quote with Direct Line was £600+.

Hastings Direct was just over £300, and there were several others at around that price.

I had done the typical thing of letting the original insurer renew several times, so I 'over paid' for quite a few years,

What's done is done, at least I'm straight now - until the next time.
