The living room gas fire was lit for the first time this Autumn/Winter on Saturday.

The rest of the heating went on for the first time last night.

My gas wall heater has not been brought back into use yet post-summer, but I did start wearing my long johns t'other day, and I am wearing a fleece hat and a big padded lumberjack shirt this evening.

Unless the weather suddenly turns really cold, I'd hope to get well into October before heating this room.

It's a pretty cold house though - it feels colder indoors during the day than it does outside for about 9 months of the year!

Does not come on in this house until october. That is a rigid rule lol. Plus once it starts to turn cold I like to brazen it out a bit so my body gets used to it. Then when it turns really cold I will use the heating if needed. If I jump to the heating straight away I won't feel the benefit when it goes really cold!! (Mum jacket/going outside logic)

I've got ancient storage heaters but can't afford to put gas in. It is currently only 3 degrees outside this morning and I am struggling not to put at least one of them on. Just about to head out on the bike and hope the sun will have come up a bit by the time I get back and warm the house up a bit. I am going to try and not put them on until as late as I can stick it out this year as I am pretty cash strapped like many. The problem with storage heaters is that they take so long to heat up/cool down that I find once they are on I just leave them on. Gas would certainly be much more controllable.

Ours went on for a while last night didn't take long for pullover to come off. Testing the heating as we only moved in, in June. It is very effective, almost looking forward to cold winter nights.

I have a little gizmo from British gas that shows how much energy is being used at any given time. It's amazing how little it shows ...then the bill is always so high..it's cursed I tel thee.

whats cheaper...on 24/7 low or once eve and once morning?
that's a hard one to answer, iv experimented plenty, the problem is if the walls get cold, you spend most of your heat warming them up, high ceilings are also an issue.

anyhow, if ur only in your home say, 3 waking hours at night, and about the same in the morning, iv found putting it on the timer is cheaper, for when you wake up and get home.

however if you spend more time at home than work 24/7 is better, however for the first week or so (depending on insulation) it will be more expensive because your heat will be soaked up by ur sofa, carpets, walls and etc, but once your whole home reaches a steady temp, it will be cheaper and easyer to keep, but unfortunately it gets stuffy fast. and you end up opening windows.

i tend to be quite thrifty and i have draft proofed my sitting room door, turned off all radiators exept for my sitting room one. and i use an electric heater for 30min in the morning (timer) to get me out of bed

the kitchen gets heated when i cook (oven) and the shower soon warms the bathroom, so i only need one room to be warm. thats my cheapest way

The heating wars have not yet started in our house but I am sure it won't be long. Hoping to drag it out until at least the end of October.
