(I missed your post.)do you want the technical reason ?
(I missed your post.)
Yes please - what is the technical reason for people being obsessed with being warmer in spring, autumn or winter than they are comfortable being in summer?
I can see why you and your neighbour below are having 'noise' problems! No way should you be able to make out each other's conversations. (But it does sound as if there is more to it than just noise.)It was a bit cool last night so we shut a couple of windows. Downstairs has her heating on and I could hear her saying that this quarter's bill was going to cost her a fortune!! She's quite loud in conversation.
I am beginning to wonder if I might get through to November before putting my heater on this year? (If we suddenly get a change of wind direction bringing in an Arctic blast, then you know who to blame!)
Ok, so you have a dodgy thermostat, but I can tell that when my sister's is set to 22 degrees, that is about what she gets. I have to sit in shorts and t-shirt in mid-winter to avoid overheating, and if she then starts cooking, the place gets even hotter. It's horrible!Thermostat may be at 21 but the air temp can be cooler. Our old bimetallic stats needed to be set at 25 to get the house to 17 degrees. Yes I am that sad to test the stats temp off on points with a calibrated digital thermometer used for commissioning commercial systems . Our new digital stats are accurate and are set at 16 for the times we need heat and 12 for when we don't . Gas usage has dropped significantly too.
I will change my question - most people would not put their heating on in summer when the air temperature is 13 - 15 degrees, so why do they heat their houses to get the air temperatures up to 17 - 25 degrees at other times of the year?
When I visit my older sister in the winter, she always puts the radiator on in the guest bedroom. I always tell her not to do it, but she ignores me 'because it is cold'. Yes, it's cold outside, but it is a double-glazed, insulated house and the room is much warmer than my bedroom at home, even without the damn radiator on! I have to remember to go up there hours before bedtime and turn it off, and leave the door open to let the warm air out.I'm guessing, but maybe it's because, having been outside in cold temperatures, they want a real change when they get indoors. Personally, I find public buildings, shops etc to be almost intolerably hot.....and don't get me on the subject of overheated bedrooms....
