Looks like Sun/Mon will be the time to cave.

Gonna make it to tomorrow now, but think I'll crack tomorrow evening, if not before. Currently 5C outside, 14C inside, without any heating. The oodie has been donned, and I'm about to down a venison stew. The winter duvet has already been deployed. Serious business.

Heating finally on, albeit I've only activated the program that switches on the bedroom radiators.

Radiators in the bedrooms? How decadent is that?

I'm not going to beat a cold snap in either 1986 or '88, when the toilet froze over in the night (mind you, it was minus-teens outside, at my house at the time that overlooked Dartmoor). 'Ice-breaker' took on a whole new meaning in the morning.

We currently don’t have the heating but the wood burner has been on most of the evening. However poor old Bertie has got heat exhaustion.

A woodburner is definitely cheating, not least as that's my sole source of heat when I'm in the French house. If I get there mid-December, it'll probably be about 4C indoors prior to the Jotul being lit and turned up to the nuclear setting.

Doing a big cook is kind of cheating, but can be allowed under the exemption 4/7/d4 if there are extenuating circumstances (such as starvation). Electric kettles are not covered by the regulations, as hot drinks are a recognised way to delay switching on central heating (or lighting stoves).

I spent my early childhood in Shetland so I know all about the front room being the only one with heat.

The new gaff has central heating split into 3 circuits so you can heat only the rooms that are occupied. In this case I have it running overnight to heat the bedrooms and en suites only.

The advantage of unheated upper floors is that it rather encourages one to get a move on and get on with the day once that critical decision to get out from under the duvet has been taken.

When your not putting on the heating or lighting the wood burner. Do you spend your time whipping yourself with thorns or nettles once you’ve removed your course hair under garments.😉

I know it might all seem daft — well it is daft — but it's quite a fun challenge every year, which also reduces the electricity bill, focuses the mind on good/creative clothing choices, makes me appreciate natural warmth even more, and reminds me how insanely hot a lot of people keep their houses, at a time when profligate energy use is only adding to the pressures on the climate.

I do my suffering when I go out on my bike not when I’m trying to chill post ride.
