I've just had to raise my front mech after finding that the clearance between it and the large ring was non-existent for a run of about half-a-dozen teeth. The clearance on the opposite side of the ring is a couple of mm.

Unsurprisingly, my changes aren't quite as smooth now, so I'd like to do something about it.

I'm not convinced that the ring is out of true (though it's an alloy ring, so I suppose it might be), and I've seen references on the net to repositioning the ring on the spider then loosening the bolts slightly and bashing the high side to move it relative to the spider, which sounds a bit crude to me, and would depend on there being enough play in the bolt holes to allow movement.

Does that really work?

If not, would there be any point in rotating the ring relative to the spider (XCR, 4-leg) in the hope that one of the other 3 possible positions minimises the eccentricity? Obviously I'd still have to line up the index marks on the other two rings of the triple.
