Possibly... I'm a bit reluctant to do this because of the weird feel and look of having different brakes.
This suggests that the SRAM Red LH shifter is only around half of 280g (maybe less - I'd assume that the RH lever has more gubbins inside?). I'd be doing well to get a standalone brake lever for less than 140g. I've only got one mid-90s lever knocking about in my shed - it looks terrible but weighs 155g - and I don't have my own pillar drill to do the drillium thing. I don't really want to 'gut' the existing lever in case I ever want to change back or sell the bike. I could buy a LH Rival lever for £50 - maybe less on
eBay - which is quite steep to save 10g!
The standard practice, I believe, is to keep a bit of gear cable inner intact, route it underneath the brake lever clamp, pull it taut and trap it so that the gear lever doesn't move or rattle.
