Damn! The 11g single-length titanium chainring bolts I’ve just put in are heavier than the doubles I’ve taken out!

I’ve fitted this 56g 38T n/w chainring in lieu of the 143g of 50T/34T that are now residing in the shed.

I’ve saved only a measly 83g by removing the SRAM Red front mech - that’s the problem with having high-end kit to start with!

The front mech hanger is riveted on, and it’s a bit of a one-way street to drill the rivets out, so I’m keeping that on 🤔

i meant merely as a weight saving measure for pure hill climbing as most folk dont tend to ride on the drops for that , unless your Pantani

Indeed, although it would always weigh on my mind that one day I'd just casually, reflexedly drop from the tops onto.... absolutely nothing

Change the left brifter to a standard brake lever?
Possibly... I'm a bit reluctant to do this because of the weird feel and look of having different brakes. This suggests that the SRAM Red LH shifter is only around half of 280g (maybe less - I'd assume that the RH lever has more gubbins inside?). I'd be doing well to get a standalone brake lever for less than 140g. I've only got one mid-90s lever knocking about in my shed - it looks terrible but weighs 155g - and I don't have my own pillar drill to do the drillium thing. I don't really want to 'gut' the existing lever in case I ever want to change back or sell the bike. I could buy a LH Rival lever for £50 - maybe less on eBay - which is quite steep to save 10g!

The standard practice, I believe, is to keep a bit of gear cable inner intact, route it underneath the brake lever clamp, pull it taut and trap it so that the gear lever doesn't move or rattle.

You could put in a £20 offer for this. But I grant you this is serious marginal gains territory!

So I got as far as fitting the new chainring with the new heavy bolts yesterday, and I’ve removed the front mech and the chain (which I can afford to shorten now - another little saving which you can be sure will be documented).

The eagle-eyed among you will notice that I’ve also swapped the saddle for this rather sexy sub-100g AliExpress model:

This was nice bar tape, but at 110g(!), it had to come off.

I’m replacing it with this stuff:
