I am sure they have picked up as well but been in use in Britain for many decades. Not a new phrase here.

Is it still not shifting. You have adjusted the limit screw ? PS that mech is filthy. Go clean where the limit screws stick out and contact the cam on the cage.

Yes mate it's shifting thank you. Cleaned it up too.

The question then shifted (pardon the pun) to the gear cable routing - some on here were suggesting the cable was attached on the wrong side of the bolt (makes sense intuitively) - but the design of the cable clamp is weird or at least I don't understand it.

Looks OK from the picture as that's where the groove is. Worth giving the pivots etc a quick squire with GT85 every so often, especially winter. A mate of mine seized his XT mech on his MTB as he was commuting on it, and never needed to change down the front ! This happened within a year of buying the bike. Try not to let them get too mucky, and pay attention to cables too. Cleaner cables means it won't drag crud into cable outers.
