In the local £1 store I found a small cycle pump for [obviously] £1. Anyway I tried it out yesterday as I had to swap a tyre and, hey, it works fine. Will it achieve 100psi, no chance. Will it put enough air in a tyre to get me home [slowly], yep it sure will. Does it matter if it gets nicked, left by the roadside or lost - no. Just a thought but not everything that's cheap is useless. May only ever need it once but that will be a quid well spent.

One of these cost me less than £2.00; I carry both types of connector and it fits comfortably inside my mountain biking backpack. When someone punctures and it's cold and windy or the Caledonian Luftwaffe is on the attack and mini pumps aren't doing the job this one comes out and gets the group moving again fast.
