That's a good point. DVLA send VED refund by cheque, I have one waiting to pay in. I think there is still a Nationwide branch in central Cardiff, must remember tomorrow.

I think my cheque was a refund of over paid tax when our OAP started and the tax stuff changes
so from "the government"

seems like they are abou tthe only people who still use them

I even know a couple of cafes that refuse cheques and if your card doesn;t work and you don;t have cash they just trust you to pay online when you get home
rather than take cheques!

Cheques from companies, government agencies etc, are going to be around for a long time. The alternative, would be payments direct into a bank account. This would mean companies would have to hold confidential information on all individuals. There would be numerous instances were people have changed bank accounts and the issuing company would have loads of failed transactions and would need systems to process the fails.

Some customers, may not have bank accounts (children) or have deceased and accounts closed.

Printed cheques from companies are a straight forward process,( for the company) and I suspect will continue for some time.

When I first moved here I used to get a letter every months or so from a company
including a cheque for a few pounds

addressed to the previous owner

I did open one once to get an address to tell them he had moved
but they said they legally had to send this letter and cheque to the address he had registered

they said to just "return to sender" and they would deal with it

It stopped after about 8 or 9 years - I presume they found him!

Wow - the DVLC ceased to exist long before cheques ceased to be in regular use. 1st April 1990 I do believe

Not seen one for years. Surprised no one has mentioned the infamous Blankety Blank cheque book (and pen)! I used to have (and hopefully still do have somewhere) a Bank of England cheque book (as an employee you could have an account with them) which I thought was really cool! But I stopped trying to use it as no shop assistant had ever seen one and didn't believe it was real.

Heard the same story from a colleague I worked with. He had worked for the BofE for 20 years in the 60's &70's and told me that BofE cheques were often refused.

As well as our joint account I used have separate account for stuff like race entries, bike stuff and fuel. Mrs W put my allowance in to this account every month🤣🤣🤣 However she mistakenly used a cheque from this account to pay a bill and the cheque was returned by the bank as there were not enough funds in the account to cover the cheque.
The bank said the were going to charge me for this till I pointed out it wasn’t my signature on the cheque and are they not supposed to cheque signatures. They said they didn’t have time to check every cheque to see if it had the correct one on it.😱

Someone posted me cheque only yesterday, they don’t do ‘on-line’ banking. Now I have the feckin’ faff of paying it in.

Our bank branch allows cheque deposits through the ATM outside.

I use cheques for my annual ISA pay in as some Building Societies are not set up for "more modern" money transfer processes.

This seems to apply to Societies that have stayed "stand alone" and not become banks.

Another reason for using a cheque is trying to do a bank transfer from NatWest for 20k (in my experience) is extremely difficult to do as they "auto block" large transfers resulting in phone calls, pleading to access your own money etc.

What's this thing you call a "bank branch"

I saw an article about one in a very old history book

On which subject - Lloyds are closing their branch here

that leave Santander and Halifax

but I can;t see them both lasting long - probably close one and the other become a "banking hub" whatever that is

If Santander closes I will consider closing my accounts with them - I have several around the place for a variety of reasons
but I have closed most and that could be the next of they close the branch

Not been in a bank branch for maybe a couple of decades.

Been in a quaint Cumbrian BS as we both have a long-term ISA with them at very good rates.

Every year we have to go in and update the interest on our cute little Passbooks. Total retro throwbacks!

The BS itself has been undergoing a Digital Transformation for some time - there are scant signs of that, tbh.

The second, in bold, is set to be renamed the first.
They're not closing a Lloyds branch, just relocating it.
