Work colleague has after a weekend of practice decided to go clipless.

He came in this morning using them but has gone home using normal shoes on a clipless pedal saying the commute is too busy.

said I thought he'd damage the pedal.... is that the case?

It seems unlikely, it wouldn't be much fun to ride though.

I was right about that saddle
For a newcomer, riding clipless on a busy commute has it's perils, i.e. if you're not used to it you can get into trouble.
He may have had a scare in the morning.
Best ask them nicely in the morning!

I tried it once, it was hard to get any power down and my feet kept slipping off the pedals.

Are they double sided pedals or single sided pedals? I have single sided pedals on my fixed and double sided on my geared bike.

Forgot my shoes once and rode a 10 mile TT wearing sandals with Look pedals!

One good thing about SLs is that you can use them as flats. Sometimes my feet swell up and I can't get my cycling shoes on. I ride in trainers. No problems. (Except that odd feeling of dislocation from the bike, of course.)
