For a newcomer, riding clipless on a busy commute has it's perils, i.e. if you're not used to it you can get into trouble.
He may have had a scare in the morning.
Best ask them nicely in the morning!
One good thing about SLs is that you can use them as flats. Sometimes my feet swell up and I can't get my cycling shoes on. I ride in trainers. No problems. (Except that odd feeling of dislocation from the bike, of course.)
