In my limited experience of club rides there's seldom anyone in overall charge; I've been on a couple where there's a "leader" but that seems to be the rider who knows the route, not somebody who is prepared to make decisions and exert some gentle authority. So a slow rider will get dropped because the majority are only interested in a fast blast and pack behaviour takes over.

That's why I've never joined a road club, even though the idea attracts me.

The back riders have to deal with the largest speed variations at every corner & also are the ones which produce the power required to close up the group tail drag. Get strong riders at the back they can mop up the slower riders & pull them back into the group or set off & chase down the main group if something bad has happened. Also a pair of strong riders can take the front of a group split if needed.

What do you do about the rider who turns up week after week for the 'easy' ride, isn't capable of maintaining more than around 10mph and expects the group to wait for him/her at every junction/hill top, and quotes the clubs policy 'we never leave anyone behind' when the issue is raised?

I think this is why I will prob wait before trying to go out with them again, and do a bit of hill work before hand. It's a PITA being dropped, but I don't want to be 'that guy' that spoils everyone else's weekend run by making them all wait either.

Our rides are pretty much set up with A to C rides and socials on weekends with speeds on the website and if it is a no drop ride or not, I think the older clubs with few women are the macho dick swinging ones, our club has a youth section and women play a massive part in the club.

Nevertheless, I can be quite scary myself, at 5ft nothing, bellowing to a group of beginner ladies " hill coming up, change gear NOW"
