"lose weight off yourself!"

Not exactly correct.

There are two types of weight on a bicycle and its rider.

Weight that helps and weight that doesn't.

On the rider, the weight that doesn't help is the rider's fat when he's sat on the saddle.

The weight that helps is his/her muscle weight below the waist which makes the bike move forward.

A 70kg bloke with 36% fat is not going to have as much muscle as a 75 kg chap with 12% fat.
The latter is 5 kg heavier. Spot the winner?

Dear All,

I have an apology to make.

It has been pointed out to me by Shaun that my action of posting blog comments here is hugely infra-dig. I am very apologetic and realise now some of the ire I have caused.

Having made such a faux-pas I offer all my sincere apologies.

On the subject of weight I feel a little less remorseful.

I find it rather amazing how a bunch of amateur cyclists can be so dismissive of research produced by a highly regarded professor of sports science specialising in cycle dynamics. He has been considering the issue for many years and while I grant you your intuition, let me remind you that racism was intuatively acceptable when I was a child. Fortunately that pre-conception has been well and truly done to death. There are many myths about cycling weight and a quick trawl through various subjects on Cycle Chat will reveal the fact that weight is a concern.

Perhaps I am mistaken...perhaps it is I who overly reliant upon the research of science and those who frequent Universities. Maybe I am actually in the presence of a great bevy of intellectual giants in whose company, myself as a mere intellectual minnow, is not worthy to stand....or cycle...or anything else.

If this is the case, then I owe you another apology.......

I don't think we're dismissive of the research. I think any of us who care about speed and sport would agree that carrying a lot of fat is a bit of a waste of effort. Maybe if you'd made your points (in some original form) in Race or Health and Fitness, you'd have got a discussion. Posting them in Cafe (and the clue's in the name,eh?) meant you got an audience of people who give slightly less of a toss about that sort of thing and are rather fond of riding out for a piece of cake.

And your remark about racism seems a) rather over dramatic, and b) insulting, both to us on Cyclechat, and to those who suffer from racism, which I think is rather more important an issue than a conversation about heavy bikes and riders.

For someone who calls themselves 'Gentleman Cyclist' you are coming across as (if you'll pardon my saying so) a bit patronising and self important.
It's certainly not attracting me to look at your blog, which seems to be the main aim of your posts.
Sorry, and all that.

Oh well, that's me told!

I was posting with comedic intent. Not even I would be at the cooking sherry this early.
I'm still working my way through the Scotch. And the meths.

Somewhat ungentlemanly to assume that someone is a 'chap', what!
I would have thought that the "Queen of cake" tag might be a clue about Arch's "chapness" and his, sorry, her position on the subject under discussion here.
