I'm thinking more of shock damage rather than accident.

I commuted for 5 years with a laptop loose in my pannier. Not sure if I had it in the pannier for my two off's. I also droped it a few times carrying it by hand, including sending it a spinning parabola in the carpark which bashed the corner in - but still worked! Basically they are pretty robust, but not indestructable as my girlfriend discovered when she bust the screen of hers knocking ot off the sofa.

Road vibrations can kill spinning drives if they are powered on, but most pricey laptops probably run flash drives these days which would be fine.

If I recall correctly, laptop drives inly spin when being accessed for that very reason, so are more robust at the expense of speed. Should be in "sleep" mode with the lid down in any case

My older MacBook Pro is the mid 2010 model and has just been upgraded to the latest OS, which it runs great. Given that OS X upgrades are free it is sensible.

Try running Windows 10, or even 8, on a laptop that old and see how well it runs or if you are able to get drivers for the hardware.

My old Dell came out in 2009 (though mine was purchased in 2012), and that ran Windows 10 fine until my daughter killed it.

Assuming you bought the Dell new I would highly suspect some hardware changes took place between a 2009 launch and a 2012 sale date. Either that or you got a good deal on old stock :okay:

The minimum spec required for Windows 10 isn't particularly high but performance is pretty poor when run at or close to that.

It was cheap (less than £300 from Tesco) but it was built in 2012. Looking at a review from 2009 shows no major hardware changes that I can see - same processor, onboard graphics etc. It came with Windows 7, but was updated every time.
