My understanding of lock-down is that we are only allowed to make essential journeys.
How can a visit to Costa possibly be classed as essential?
The powers that be who have allowed Costa to re-open (and a few other fast food outlets) have created the current attitude of "I can go out as long as I am visiting anywhere that is open. I'll go for a run in the car and if I get pulled by the Polis I'll just tell them I'm heading to Costa/KFC/Burger King".

Costa etc never actually had to close, they chose to do so :okay:

Costa is owned by Coca Cola, having being sold by what was Whitbread to allow them to focus on their budget hotels (old readers might remember Whitbread used to be a brewery)?

I'm particularly unimpressed with their disingenuous statement in response to the chaos they're causing, inferring that they're only open out of the goodness of their hearts to allow key workers to enjoy a hot drink on their way to saving the nation.
Firstly, do they think we're stupid? Secondly, if that were true they could easily restrict sales to genuine key workers by insisting on ID, couldn't they?

People are obviously climbing the walls with this lockdown. I couldn't believe the size of the que in Glasgow for this muck but that's desperation for you, people have nowhere to go and nothing to do so sitting for an hour in the car queuing for coffee is now achievable.

I quite like McD' coffee. Strong enough to be tasty, not so strong or bitter to require three or four sugars,

I'm missing my mid-ride Greggs coffee and pie or pasty.

My choice of takeaway coffees is usually a filter coffee from Pret A Manger (99p) followed by a latte at Nero’s (£3.10) or premium filter coffee from Costa (1.59). Starbucks is just rank and sod an Americano when it is the same thing as a filter coffee, just three times the price at £3+! My favourite coffee though Is from lanes espresso in Leeds just outside the train station once you get past the annoying artisan milk art thing they do that take too long!

In Accrington Costa and a Wetherspoons pub were the only places open to socialise, apart from a few small cafes and one of those slot machine places (I went in one day out of curiosity and found a small cafe in the back, which was quite full of customers),before the lock down. Maybe they do serve a purpose, even if they sell mundane stuff.

Another little anecdote for you. I used to see an elderly woman walk trepidly, carrying two of those coffees with lids on back to her flat, from my kitchen window.I always wondered why she didn't just make her own coffee in her flat.

They have them there to keep you there. If you were to go out to buy a coffee, you might not return.
