wasnt sure where to post this but..........

ive always wondered if there is any kind of isurnace you can take out to cover the cost of damage to your bike, should you bin it in a race?

is there such a thing?

was talking to my Dad about it today, he doesnt seem to think there would be anything, but i would have thought there would be some kind of personal cover to cover your equipment?

i know all races have insurance to cover the damage to people.....

Most cover you for normal stuff but exclude races, I think you have to pay extra to cover you for races (or find an insurer that does cover you but will be more of a specialist cycling outfit).

Never seen a true cover - there is certainly a policy somewhere which will cover for UK time trials, and some have cover for damage at a "race event" but these are more related to off-the-bike time or inside the transition zone of a triathlon.

sorry I dont know but I downloaded the policy guide from the ETA link I posted and it will definitely say in there..take a look.

I was looking at their definition of a building in the hope my shed would qualify (wishfull thinking I know).

Of all I have looked at ETA is the cheapest for how much it offers.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
From the CTC website:

2. What is Not Covered Underwriters will not pay:

  • The amount of the Policy Excess applicable
  • Claims where the security conditions have not been complied with
  • For loss or damage when the cycle is used in competition, unless cover has been extended to include competition use
  • For claims where other exclusions as defined in the Certificate of Insurance apply (please consult the Certificate of Insurance for full details of other exclusions to cover).

had a reply to my email and they said.....

"Thank you for your email.

If you race with your Cycle then you would be required to add the racing extension.

You are covered for accidental damage to your cycle. If you damage your cycle and you are unable to ride he cycle due to the damage then yes it would be covered. We do have a minimum claim amount of £100.

We trust the above clarifies however please do not hesitate to contact us should you require further assistance.

Kind Regards"

so seems like would be covered???

I am sure it can be done but chances are it will be very ££££ and you are better oiff financially risking it. sod's law ofcourse means that you'll trash your bike in the first race.

I did loads of time trials - never got round to road races - and never even occured to me to get insurance - then again my top TT bike cost me around £ 400.

I've sorted my racing "insurance" for next year already - an identical frame off ebay for not much....even then I hope that I don't trash an aluminium frame!

I've also dropped my road bike insurance for this year as the bike is 3.5 years old and has been made over a couple of times - difficult to value, so the cost of the insurance now outweighs the replacement cost in the event of a problem. Any new bikes and I'll certainly be going back to insurance.
