What made me look for a bike app was because I was using Samsung's "S Health" to monitor food/drink intake and map my walking exercise. That was fine but there was no facility to monitor my Bike rides. I was hoping to find an app that I could use instead of S Health but Map My Ride doesn't seem to do it all so I am just using it for the bike rides and am carrying on with S Health for everything else until a free all singing, all dancing app comes along. I'm not holding my breath.LOL

My Fitness Pal plays nicely with Strava. I use the free version of both.

I am still going through the search for the ideal app (for Android). I used to use MapmyRide on a Samsung S3 but found it would stop tracking mid way through a ride. So I got frustrated as I lost a lot of timing history. I then switched to Strava which has not let me down when recording rides. I like Strava a lot as it has some cool features like showing who has ridden past you during your ride (fly-bys). It is good for the community side too.

Recently though I have been trying new courses and I don't want to keep stopping to check my phone to see where to go. So I want voice directions and neither MapMyRide nor Strava can do this. Not even if you pay for premium.

I have so far tried
  • OSMand (too complicated with a computerised voice),
  • RunGo (Nice voice, but recorded rides can't be exported to eg. Strava),
  • Ride with GPS but you have to pay for premium to get voice navigation. Pity they don't do a free trial period as I resent having to pay to try an app out.

On recent rides I have used OSMand and RunGo to give me directions which has been fairly successful, while running Strava alongside to log the ride. I have yet to get a full recording of the ride as Strava has stopped recording each time, and the voice nav "lost" the gps. I know it isn't the phone because Strava on its own is fine on the same routes.

In my search I have drawn up the check list below for what I consider to be the ideal features for free app. I would then be prepared to pay for premium content if it adds sufficient value. Can anyone suggest any other apps with these features?. :bicycle:

  • Record ride using GPS
  • Route planner
  • Route directions with good quality voice which can be turned on and off
  • Bluetooth connection to earbuds
  • Visual guidance a la SatNav (which can be turned on/off to save battery)
  • Export ride details to other apps especially Strava. - With timings or Strava won't take it.
  • Import routes from other apps
  • Good graphical interface (ie simple and clear)
  • Good well integrated web site.

Yes there is, scroll down on the main S Health page to 'Manage Items' press that and again scroll down and you will find 'Exercise' ......cycling is the 3rd one

I hope that helps

Well, it's complicated because it does complicated things. It's worth persevering with it a little longer.

You can change the voice under general settings, and download a spoken English voice. She's very sexy, sounds like a breathy Jessica Rabbit. Downside is you lose spoken street names.

Well, OSMAnd does all of them except the last. But I don't really miss it. You can draw the maps on any route plotting website, and upload them to dozens of ride tracking websites. And not having a website gives OSMAnd it's super power - it works well totally offline.

Thanks jefmcg. I spent quite some time with OSMand, and found the interface frustrating. And what put me off most was that robotic voice. If nothing better turns up I may give it another go. Thanks for encouraging me to do so.

Thanks gasinayr. Viewranger looks good, but does it give voice instructions during your ride? Also can you import routes and export ride details to Strava? I like Strava and I want to keep using it to log my rides as it connects in with Bounts, and with clubs.
