The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I sometimes wear a cycle cap like these http://www.prendas.co.uk/cycle-clothing/hats-headwear/cotton-cycling-caps.html?p=2 instead of a helmet on more sedate rides but i wonder if i'm tempting fate? So i tend to wear them more when out walking or down the pub etc.
 http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/ Rule 22: "Cycling caps can be worn under helmets, but never when not riding, no matter how hip you think you look. This will render one a douche, and should result in public berating or beating. The only time it is acceptable to wear a cycling cap is while directly engaged in cycling activities and while clad in cycling kit........."
etc, etc

I wear a cap sometimes with a helmet sometimes without depending on my mood and the weather.

The weather influencing cap/no cap I can understand but I am intrigued by your mood influencing it. If you're feeling a little down, maybe SAD, does that make you more or less likely to wear a cap?

The only real cycling rule is make sure you ignore those nobbers at velominati and their stupid "rules"

Cap under helmet just for added warmth on cool days and the peak as a visor.
I used to like wearing just a cap but after my crash the other weekend it'll be helmet all the time now. Wore a hole in mine sliding and cracked it in the impact. :-(

As a matter of interest, did the polystyrene compress or has it kept its shape?

I usually wear a cap for a) aesthetic reasons (it stops my hair looking like one of those badger shaving brushes by the end of a ride), b) practical reasons (it keeps the sun, rain and sweat out of my eyes) and c) safety reasons.

That last one's a little tongue in cheek but i have some anecdata to back it up... My head bounced off the tarmac this one time and the friction swivelled my cap around 180 degrees. I'd have broken me neck had I been wearing a helmet.* Not even a graze wearing my cap.

I probs don't suit the cycling cap look that well, my head's slightly too big for the tiny peak in my eyes but they're so practical. Unlike other hats they don't get all independent on downhills.

*possibly.
