Cycling in Lanzarote

Just back from Lanzarote and all I can say is wow! I wen't out for a few road rides around Playa Blanca on a hire bike.

The roads are in immaculate condition throughout, and drivers are very very very considerate. Some bigger roundabouts and faster roads were a little intimidating so I avoided these.

The temperature and the sun were not an issue for me as I went out early (sunrise at 7am) and was back before the mid-day sun which is very strong.

The Volcanic scenery is crazy! and awesome - I loved it.

I feel very blessed to have been able to experience this.

Next stop, the Loire Valley!

Lanzarote, one of my favourite destinations! The north of the island is equally amazing cycling through Haria onto El Mirado Rio, the views are amazing. We run cycling holidays and training camps out there and I agree, landscape and scenery is awesome. Was it windy? tends be windy out there.

Yeh, i forgot to mention the wind. At certain points it stops you in your tracks. I regret not riding to Mount Timanfaya. next time.

I was in Playa Blanca last November and hired a bike locally. The weather was still hot during the day and the roads so smooth, it was horrible going for a ride when I got back to the UK.

Yes roads are in great condition, next time try Costa Teguise or Puerto del Carmen, that way you can cycling north of the island through Haria, picture above and also up to El Mirador Rio which has spectacular views. I went to Playa Blanca and there is a ferry you cam get from their to Fuerteventura for a day..

Best advice I can offer is unless you are already booked to go to Lanzarote, then book Majorca instead. The roads in Lanza are great, but there is every chance that the wind will utterly destroy the enjoyment.

What's not to like about averaging 10mph for the first half of a ride (North from PB every time when I was there) then managing to get back several hours later with an overall ride average of nearly 18mph - gotta love that tailwind back home

True - but I don't need to go to Lanzarote to ride at 10mph into a block headwind - I can do that here for free!

Been there with friends twice, staying in Playa Blanca, we got cheap deals and had a good time because of the people we were with. The roads in Lanzarote are in excellent shape, the drivers are as good as any, but I'm afraid the constant high winds and rather uninspiring terrain (to my eye) have put me off going again.

I would recommend staying in either Costa Teguise or Puerto del Carmen NOT Playa Blanca. This is because you have more scope for rides there. Most people make the mistake of choosing Playa Blanca as it's a popular holiday resort but it's a drag out of the resort.

It's a drag out of PdC as well, unless you ride the bike path along the coast. We hired from Revolution Bikes - great bunch.

The wind can be a danger in Lanzarote, heading back to Playa Blanca from Timanfaya at 47mph with the cross winds were challenging. The climb from Playa Blanca to Femés was a tough climb but great fun
