Out today i saw a cyclist wearing a waterproof type jacket, under helmet hat, full fingered gloves, longs/leggings and overshoes. This was in 23C ! It takes a lot to warm me up but i was sweating in just a short sleeve jersey, shorts and mesh shoes. Why was this fellow wearing winter clothing i wondered? I imagined what it'd be like to wear that tackle in such heat. I reckon i could do it but there'd be no reason to do apart from a bet maybe. Could you and would you ride so wrapped up on a warm or hot day, and on a flip side could you, would you ride in summer cycle clothing in say 5C?
Maybe he was trying to sweat, like a mobile sauna type thing :heat: :bicycle:

There's no such thing as the wrong clothing, only bad weather.

We have then here as well. One chap yesterday afternoon was in a hi-viz jacket (of the type used by workmen), helmet with hi-viz helmet cover, gloves and longs. His face was beetroot in colour.

Every summer a local cemetery employs a team of grass strimmers to do the whole cemetery. They work in a line from one end to the other taking about a week as it's so big. They have to wear high viz plastic jackets and pants, gloves helmets and face visors for "health and safety reasons". I've seen them working in 30C heat, it must be horrendous for them!:heat:

When we cycled in Holland in the spring it was 25°c. We stayed on a farm for a couple of nights. Eric, the owner had on a woolly hat, long sleeves, body warmer, jeans and cotton gloves.

He had no pigment in his skin. He couldn't be exposed to sunlight and also struggled to keep warm.

There's someone I see on my drive to work who cycles in a thick coat, scarf and balaclava with a helmet perched uselessly on the back of their head, even in warm weather. I don't know how they do it.

I've noticed this phenomenon over the summer. It seems to be the commuter riding quite slow rather than the recreational cyclist who rides faster.
I can't get my head round why they are so wrapped up. I sometimes commute starting at 5.20am and it's not been cold

I don't give a flying squirrel what people wear on their bikes, but the boil-in-the-bag rider does leave me a bit puzzled. Round my crib, they seem to be the couple in early retirement and matching hi-viz jackets out for a weekend trundle. More often than not they look as miserable as sin, which is fair given their advanced state of dehydration.

All through this very warm SE England summer I have seen the odd one or two commuters in full winter custard regalia top to toe. 'tis madness I tell ya!

You have just reminded me of the time that I rode the Rossendale Mountain Bike Challenge on a very hot day. I was feeling very warm wearing shorts and a short-sleeved top. I was overtaken by a rider who was wearing a heavy duty tracksuit, the kind of thing that footballers used to wear for winter training sessions in the 1970s. The sweat was pouring off him ...
