Specsavers case. Unbelieveable, simple failure to observe. Got to be due care (careless driving). Plus the third party costs. Insurance company won't like that!

See sara_h's post above.

"The motorist, a 41-year-old man, was convicted of driving without due care and attention and was given three points on his licence and ordered to pay £85 costs, an £85 fine and a £20 victim surcharge."

Where the heck was the driver looking?
.......looking at the inside of his offside door pillar, I would guess.

No real financial penalty, his insurance won't go up that much. Minor inconvenience. Imagine how the 12 year old girl's mum or dad felt, watching that.

A pittance. This moron deserves a punishment he'd remember for a long time. The girl will be feeling the impact of this for years, possibly decades! One of my younger sisters was hit by a car when about 10, and even now about 35 years later, I'm not convinced she's completely over it.

Sergeant Carl Knapp of Sussex Police just had to say this though: "This footage shows a car driver to blame but there have equally been incidents where cyclists have been knocked down after pulling in front of vehicles without looking."

What does he mean, "equally"? And why do people always end up talking about cyclist behaviour even when, as here, the poor cyclist did absolutely nothing wrong at all.

He's a nobber paid to spout the same old line! He's probably done a few "punishment passes"when the uniform's off.

Probably because the sins of the few are quoted to tarnish the image of the many, where have I heard that before............?????

The above explains why we humans look but often do not see.
Pretty frightening really.

Some of the above and possibly poor eyesight... surprising numbers of drivers need glasses but are either too stupid to realise it or too vain to wear them.

Possibly texting.
Time that we had a national Police or Govt safety campaign, posters and PIFs etc to curb it.

Research from Specsavers Corporate Eyecare reveals that a staggering one in three drivers do not meet the legal standard of vision for driving.

Over a period of eight months, Specsavers carried out screening tests on visitors to its Drive Safe roadshows. Previous studies had estimated the number of drivers with substandard vision to be one in six but this new evidence suggests the actual figure may be more worrying still. The increased risk to all road users is clear but there are also implications to be considered by employers.

The take-home message of that article for drivers seems to be, look where you're going. But don't worry too much if you don't and hit someone - as long as you can afford a couple of hundred quid, it'll all go away.

I liked the "advice" from the Police, which included making sure you're wearing a correctly fitted, securely fastened helmet. :banghead:
