I'm with Admiral. Covered up to £2500 (if I remember correctly), changed from Direct Line because they only covered up to £1000, when I replaced with a more expensive one, it was extra and went up by about £70.

Yeah the things I am checking are:

  • Type of lock
  • What counts as an immoveable object when away from home
  • Need for locking to immoveable object at home
  • Any restriction on cover close to home
    • Both Yellowjacket and Bikmo both don't cover the bike within a certain distance of home which seems strange. Yellowjacket's term is 'within walking distance', thats too vague.

Not spotted that one

Given that most of us have had a long walk home at some point due to a puncture (etc!!) then "walking distance" could be interpreted as several miles!

And what exactly is the point in anti-theft insurance if it doesn;t cover you if you take the bike shopping and it gets nicked while locked up outside the shop!

Missed your earlier post but all good advice, I will double check they cover eBikes. The shop I'll either walk or cycle to it. Either is possible. I know for Bikmo they were referring to their recovery service (well refund on a taxi to get home!), I'd have to check on theft cover for close by.

My last puncture was yes about 8 miles from home, which I walked....

I just did a quote with Velosure for the bikes that are beyond the cover of my home insurance. Four bikes in total - it would cost more than my car insurance!

All of the specialist insurers are asking for arounf 75% of the cost of my home insurance for 1 bike, although I like some of the benefits I have to look at the main reason for cover (theft). I'm thinking a combination of the cheapest (barclays) and British Cycling/CyclingUk/Other for some personal/legal cover is best.

I have 4 decent road bikes, but I doubt that they have a great value now. Also

If they were bought new then the insurers I am looking at will replace at the today cost, for second hand it depreciates.

I need to phone whomever I go with as my bike was a gift, though had been bought new. Need to know which category they put it in.

How did you find out about Bikmo not covering within a distance from home ?
Only distance I can find in my policy is one about distance of outside fixed bike storage from your home.

Apoligies I've got my companies mixed up, I've done a lot of quotes today. I'll correct the OP.

Its ETA, they confirmed on the phone it's 500m. Their policy documents state it is a mile but both limits they said refer to cycle rescue not theft.
https://www.eta.co.uk/bicycle-insurance/key-facts-documents/

With Yellow Jersey their document specifically lists not covered for theft within walking distance, which is nonsense.

"Pedal cycles left unattended for more than 1 hour within walking distance of your home are not covered for theft, unless stored in an insured location."

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Insured with Barclays stand alone. You specify the most expensive bike an all other less valuable bikes are insured too. I have 2 e-bikes and 3 others insured on the policy. No specific lock required, but locked to an immovable object. Never had to claim so can't say how good or otherwise.

I managed to post my reply before I'd finished it.

I was going to add
..... Also, a tandem trike and my OH's two bikes and one of my daughter's bike that she abandoned when she went to Uni.
They are all kept in our integral garage, so I feel they are fairly safe and I never leave them unattended. I had a bike stolen when I was about 14 and learnt my lesson.

I've probably got some kind of cover on my household insurance and I am a member of Cycling UK for the third-party aspect, but for the bikes, I just "self-insure" them, rather than pay expensive premiums.

I did wonder if i'd read my policy right.
I'd recommend Bikmo found them to be competitive and have clear levels of cover.
Plus they are an ethical certified B company and 1% for the plant member.

If you are not happy with the bike cover on your house and contents insurance, get another house and contents insurer. Bike specific policies are an utter rip-off (IMVHO) and have all sorts of weasel word get out clauses to trip you up.

Oh I'm happy with them, it was a good price, I just wasn't expecting to get a new bike this quickly!

I've pretty much decided to get Barclays Bike Insurance for about £50, and CyclingUK membership for the personal insurance. Their benefits page has a lot of discounts particularly for outdoor type stuff Ill use.

Come renewal time I'll do some more shopping around on the house insurance, got a few recommendations up thread to try.
