Cycling Shorts & Tights Question

I've found some washing instructions - from 'Bike Riders Aids 1962'

I commute with padded shorts and then some running tights over the top. It's worked fine for the past 4 winters.

Second this options as an ex runner i had loads of running tights and padded shorts with running tights on top keeps everything nice and warm on those chilly mornings.

On that point - presumably the chamois became dry and hard after washing and needed to be moistened with an oil or emulsion of some sort?

I wonder if you can still buy shorts with genuine chamois?

I used to use lanolin on my chamois inserts

Wow! Lanoline is amazing stuff and I use it to waterproof bearings and cable ends but I can't imagine smearing it on my shorts pad; it probably makes them beautifully soft but.... I can't bring myself to like the smell.
