Hi guys and gals, been registered on the forum for quite a while but more of a reader than a poster!
Anyway a quick question to put out there, used to live up in Stockton on tees until this year where I moved back home to Huddersfield, being full of hills round here I need more gears and a lighter bike!

I currently have a 2014 specialised Allez, added a few bits to it, fulcrum racing 7 wheels, Ritchey seat post, Deda stem, clipless pedals usual stuff I guess. However the time has come to upgrade, wanting a bit higher spec bike and to be honest I want something shiny new to play with for a couple of years! Do any cycle stores do part ex that's known of? Or is it better to do a gumtree?

I think it would be better to 'do a CycleChat'!

Even if you found a shop willing to take your bike, I bet they wouldn't offer as much as a private individual would pay for it.

Had my mountain bike for one year, traded it in towa des a road bike, where I bought it and received £100.
The shop were delighted as in such good nick they thought it hadn't been ridden.

If the bike cost (say) £1,000 then I am not surprised that they were delighted. If it cost (say) £150 then you should have been! :okay:

Mountain bike was £350, traded in for road bike at £675, which I got for £575.
Happy enough though , mountain bike was a slug on the roads and Felt road bike is a dream in comparison.

It's let me stick it up on the for sale board now :-)

Well I used to live in Teesside, the Allez was perfect for there as the majority of the place is flat with the odd small hill. However I moved back home to Huddersfield/Holmfirth and its hill followed by hill followed by hill! To be fair I love the bike I just want something new and a little bit more high end

Hey Jonny

Sounds like you're in my neck of the woods (I'm up in Shepley)

What new bike are you going for ?

PS agree re the hills. Always a challenge !!

I'm up in crosland hill pal, bloody hate it, you either start your ride going up a big hill or finish it going up it!
Been out your way a few times when cycling to cannon hall and back etc, as for the new bike I don't have my heart set on one in particular yet, looking to go into the £1000-£1500 bracket though.
Any recommendations?

Yep it's hilly hilly hilly!!!

A couple of friends have Trek Madone and love them. Another has a Planet X Carbon and likewise highly rates it. The key for me is the fit - if you feel comfortable on it then that's a massive part of it.

There are a few good bike shops around - JE James in Sheffield I've always found really good/helpful. Also, Sowerby Brothers in Mirfield.

I think buying a bike is so subjective but I think you've got to get a spec and go from there. For example, I have a Cube Peloton with full Shimano 105. My next would need to be a carbon frame with Ultegra as a minimum and I would even like disc brakes rather than rim.

Too many choices that's the trouble! Happy Hunting and let us know how you get on.
