You are the first person to have the ham fisted baggage handlers at an airport to of done a rear mech or other component in when the bike rattles off onto the conveyor belt, then onto a trolley and finally into the hold of the plane.

Not sure if you mean 'are' or 'are not'.

If I am mistaken and the RD is not bent, the LBS will be checking it tomorrow to get an expert opinion. The new RD then can be kept or returned. If I am not mistaken then I can get it fixed in time to do the tour. Just attempting to compensate for my lack of knowledge of bike mechanics.

Have taken off the wheel and checked the RD. Looks fairly bent with the jockey wheels at different angles. The hanger is a specialist one so having that delivered too.

Sorry but baggage handlers at airports aren't the cyclists friend. The only way you're every going to win is the get one of those hard cases.

They dented my new £2,000 bike a couple of weeks after I bought it...

I bought an expensive bike box for my next flight. They chucked that out of the plane's hold and broke the corner of it! Fortunately, the bike was protected though. I made a reinforcement out of aluminium sheet and rebuilt the corner with that expoxied in as support. I had another 6 or 7 holidays without further damage.

Me v Baggage handlers: Round 2

Narrow loss on this last trip.

Followed the earlier advice and detached the RD and wrapped with bubble wrap. Unfortunately one of the jockey teeth on the brand new derailleur was knocked off. Didn't affect the tour though. I can also use the parts from the old RD to fix it.

Any advice on the best material e.g. small cardboard box to protect the mechanism within a soft bike carrier. I'm wedded to the soft carrier as I can post them ahead to the end of the tour at minimal (€12) cost.

Unscrew the RD, leaving the chain on it. Wrap it (if you want) and then tape it (securely) between the seat stay and the chain stay towards the centre plane of the bike.
I protect the chainring with a short length of pipe insulation and then have a fabric bag which envelopes the chainrings and chain (latter terminates (loop) at the RD nestling in its safe place).
Consider removing the hanger (since that's now the pokey out vulnerable bit).
