DIY: What is this power junction box?

Speaking to a mate today at work, he just decided to update his kitchen, the leccy spent 3 days making it safe - he's been living there about 6 years... lights fitted with no earth...

I have to say I get a bit concerned when I see threads of this nature, it's always a relief to see the OP still posting as the thread draws to a close.

Mine came with a 13A plug on it and the instructions said it was (unsuprisingly) to be plugged into a 13A socket.

If an all insulated system then feasible to be like that. Would be a code 3 on an EICR requires improvement .

Wouldn't install it now but it's not " unsafe" until you start to put metal fittings that require an earth up.

Double insulated fittings and plastic switches fine. My dads is the same ,

A lot of old lamps (the sort you hung a shade on) were twin core cable only.

Or...they could have put the socket in behind the microwave avoiding the whole issue in the first place

You said "create a spur off the socket(1) & mounted a surface mount socket(2) behind the microwave ". They didn't need to create a spur off the socket, they needed to locate socket(1) properly.
