Think of it in cakes. Analogue was like having 5 chocolate cakes and each person/ channel had a chocolate cake each. Digital decided by running things more efficiently that you didn't need a whole chocolate cake each so people shared. The problem came when the accountants came in and started dividing each cake so it fed a quite large family, so channels ended up with a piece of cake about half the size it would be to work well. Digital would work a lot better either if there were more cakes, fewer channels to feed or a few other things. HD is more like a luxury cake where you can taste the difference, but also the bits of cake are quite a bit larger.

I don't want to seem materialistic and all that but it does bring pleasure to my eyes.
I only bought it this year mind (for the World Cup) and don't regret a penny of it...

Another one here with a 28" 'tube' telly,no interest in HD tbh, not got Sky so hardly any footie to watch,and I don't need to watch Eastenders in HD glory

The 'Planet Earth' T.V series was stunning in HD as is most sports. I watch a lot of news and like Sky news in HD for the graphics.

My in-laws recently got sky hd, they also could not tell the difference. I checked the connection they had been using and noticed they had been watching through the scart connection, I changed it to the HDMI and they soon noticed the difference lol.

Can't notice it at all on the 28" TV, but really can on the 42" one.
I guess that bigger screens need more data to make a smooth picture because the normal signal would just get blown up bigger and therefore more blocky. Therefore HD is more noticeable the bigger the screen you have and less noticeable the smaller.

but it does get pretty technical, in particular they are quite scathing about factory settings but it tells you how to alter them for optimal viewing. I've not gone HD yet, I know we will eventually but I don't feel any lack in our viewing ability at the moment. I do, however, have certain luddite tendencies, had same mobile for several years, never exceeded call and text allowances, don't use facebook, twitter etc. Most technological advances at home are fuelled by the kids nagging me. Except for internet access, as I've worked from home off and on for years we have the top level one from Virgin, so we've just bundled phone and tv in with that.

sd looks terrible, not becuse 'it CANT cope' but because the companies use too high a compression rate .. its a disgrace that we lost perfectly pretty analog tv to awful quality 'pack as many channels in' freeview or even sky normal. ( to be fair , i'm in line of sight to winter hill, used to get a fantastic picture

its obvious they do this, because otherwise why do the adverts for HD , that are shown on SD look visually better than the normal quality, it looks like 'it should do'!

I have a small screen that can only display 720p , I can still tell the difference between SD and HD video though..
