You can get the 20 for that price, not the 30. Don't get hung up about the pictures or Garmin's categorisation of it- it (like most GPS devices, to be entirely fair) is multipurpose. And if they didn't consider it suitable for bike use, Garmin wouldn't have done a bike mount. Certainly, plenty on here are very happy with them.

Indeed....
OSM= OpenStreetMap. As the name might suggest, free, open-source maps which can be updated, downloaded, edited without restrictions. Bryton used them for their earlier Rider 50 version as standard (they now have a commercial product in the box), and OSM routing is an option on most cycle mapping websites. Downloads in various forms available from many places, including http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl There's plenty of useful discussion about them over on YACF's GPS section.

I use my garmin etrex 20 with opencyclemaps has a sat nav in the car, for turn-by-turn directions, and as a gps when walking and on the bike. Works fine in either turn-by-turn or follow the line mode when powered by two legs.

For its various flaws, or missing functionality on the bike (cadence + HR) that I don't want and certainly don't need, it has two huge things going for it. A pair of AA batteries.

I used Navigon on my iphone. Navigon has a cycle setting which takes you from A-B on all the minor roads.
To preserve the battery life, I turned off all the unnecessary functions, reduced the screen brightness completely and just listened to the instructions through a single earphone.
Lasted all day pretty much and I got where I wanted to go with hardly touching main roads.

The closest I have found is the Garmin Montana 600

Works as a standard Garmin, but is bigger, and with earphones or a speaker will give instruction

If the OP is happy with the iPhone could we not consider an alternative?
like the abilty to recharge the iPhone on the go. I have that option if I have the barbag on (or in the car because my iPhone won't charge from the 12v lighter socket for some weird reason) and just run the iPhone off a backup battery via USB. I have the powergorrilla (from my tour and over kill for this scenario) but I am sure the minigorrilla would work just as well, be lighter though not last as long (not yet found out how many recharges of my iPhone I get, I keep loosing count) and charge other things as well. also there is a dedicated iPhone option as well for £34.95 (the powermonkey classic which gives 3 complete recharges) (the other iPhone option is only for iPhone 5's)

However, how do I charge the phone and see it at the same time and keep it safe & dry?! There appear to be no dry cases where you can have a cable attached

The point of the GPS or SatNav is have it visibly mounted on the handlebars surely, not in a bag

allows for the cable to be in whilst mounted to motorbike handle bars so probably does not need a waterproof cable, but can't see the harm.
