Does doing something "for charity" give you special rights?

Those BBC pictures are a bit of an eye opener. If there are that many people up there and they all want to go to the very top bit (the trig point or whatever) then it's only sensible that an orderly queue is formed. It's just common sense.

But if you're not obsessive about touching a particular bit of stuff then I'm sure you can get photos that are just as good, if not better, from nearby locations.

Of course this runs counter to the stamp-collecting instinct. If you haven't gone to that specific bit then it doesn't count. If you subscribe to that view, then join the queue. Doesn't matter whether you walked or got the train, whether you're doing it for a fluffy kitten charity. Get to the back of the queue. That's the price for obsessing over trig points.

We still had a little bit of a queue when we went up for sunrise a few years ago. The main reason it was blowing a gale at the top and I had to scramble up on all fours, and wasn't hanging about as I hate heights, and that trig point, with the wind, was high enough. It was incredibly busy as we were coming down, many people without adequate clothing. Hot pants and trainers might feel great at the bottom where it's warm and sunny (a group of young girls who were asking where the path was...) - it was winter gear at the top.

Regarding cycling and charity discussions upthread there are some pretty harsh generalisations along the lines of "Sponsored x miles? pah, I ride that far before breakfast".

A friend of mine just did a little fundraiser. My friend was riding with a friend of theirs who has a medical condition and is being treated at a specialist unit. They were raising funds for the unit. They didn't ride any spectacular distances by the standards of some people on here, but it was nevertheless very worthwhile, IMO. I donated a few quid.

It people wanting to pretend they were up there alone and it was an incredible achievement that causes issues.

I think this is perhaps the most pertinent issue for me. Basically, if you want the place to be deserted then you need to make the effort to go (early) to avoid other people. It's what I do if I want to visit an empty supermarket

Or just go in the winter when all the self imposed queuers are back on their sofas eating chips.

Or the Rhyd Dhu then south ridge will be fairly quiet in summer if you do not bother turning left to the summit area. Sit on south summit most days and you will have it to yourself.

There are already 1400 photos on my "Insta"! Seriously though, I have been shopping at 10pm sometimes when I can't face crowds, and whilst not deserted, it is very quiet.

They're far too smart for that. They'll just be sitting on the sofa, eating robo-chips, faking photos of themselves at the summit.

Or they will just send humans there to do it like now. Would these trig point selfie self imposed queuers do it, if there was no Instagram or Facebook etc?
