I tried to learn surfing once. Happened to be during the surfing world championships on Maresias beach, Brazil. Unlike many 80s movies, I didn't try it a couple of times and then win the championship.

In hindsight, ideal WC conditions probably wasn't ideal first-timer conditions. After inhaling most of the Atlantic I was on my knees, vomiting into the sand in front of unimpressed wife and son. The vomiting didn't stop until late that evening.

On the plus side, I still have a Maresias Beach rash vest.
