They cannot be drilled out (too hard) the only way to get them out is 'spark erosion'.

I tried that method, but it didn't quite go to plan.

Update: Breakthrough at last.

Combination of metal drill bits and (not so) "easy-out".

Now it's cleaned out and ready for a new barrel adjuster.

I *think* it's this M5 one. What do you think?

Yep but it also holds the adjuster still by the 'indents' on the black bit so less likely to drift out of adjustment due to vibration.

Just about. I screwed in an M5 bolt to test it out, went in ok.

great, maybe with a few goes it might grind the threads enough to be good , i had a similar issue with my rear brake where it had seized with rust and destroyed the old barrel adjuster getting it out .
