Take care on the bike path that goes past Bingham if you use it. I've just reported an incident that happened there. I was cycling home at 6.30 when I saw a group of kids darting around in the clump of trees that border the path. As I got closer I saw that they had barricaded the path with big tree branches that extended a fair bit across the grass. I swerved onto the grass and bumped over the branches where they were thinner and swerved back onto the path. It crossed my mind to get off and "remonstrate" with the youths, who I could then see were aged from about ten to young teens, as this thought was crossing my mind one of the little c***s sprinted out and shoved a sturdy branch right through my front spokes. I went right over my handlebars, rolled a couple of times and skidded a fair bit into the grass. I jumped up and went to see how my bike was only to find a pack of about eight feral little bastards running at me with staves and branches. I pulled the branch out from my front spokes and went forward to meet them and fortunately they bottled it, but they didn't totally run off, they just circled hyena style mouthing off ( the usual shite). One of the actually went for my bike, which is not a cool or expensive one by any means. I kept the stick and wobbled off deciding I was in a lose, lose situation. They seemed to find the situation massively entertaining and exciting, so I'd be surprised if they don't do this again. Be careful if you use this path!

I think it was there one day when kids were throwing large branches (bigger than them) at folk in the Rat Race. I wasn't in the rat race but they had a go at me too luckilyy it bounced of my front spokes. I don't think the little c***s realise the serious consequences of their carp idea of fun. I think Edinburgh path network is quite good but I tend to avoid using it to often for these reasons.

Where we went today on the club ride there were loads of little shoots going about, doing a few shouts of, "on your bike" and "you lot are gay"
The problem is you cant hit them because then your in the wrong and because of their age, but sometimes they do deserve it.
Im not meaning i would smack the kids that shouted, but i would of wanted to if i was in your situation.

Sounds quite scary. I take it you mean here-ish?:

I was on that path last week and I don't think I'll use it again. There was broken glass absolutely everywhere, so much that it was impossible to avoid. It was pure luck that I didn't have a fairy-related incident.

I'd be interested to see if there's any kind of outcome from reporting it. I don't suppose there will be, but I suppose one can hope.

Spot on! Just between the two clumps of trees on the righthand side of the picture. The police were cool, but basically said that nothing was likely to come of their investigation. One of the officers said that it was best to turn around and find another route if I suspected anything suspicious. In this case the "something suspicious" happened in an area where it was well hidden. I was really just being advised not to use that part of the bicycle path, which is probably good advice. The unfunny thing is that I crashed my bike coming home at night yesterday. I was coming through Holyrood park, which is unlit, when some twat come roaring through with his headlights on full beam in the opposite direction. I hit the kerb and came off quite heavily. I'm told the reason that there are no lights in the park are because vandals keep smashing them! So, don't go through the park at night because it can't be lit because of scumbags, and don't use substantial parts of the bikepath network because of scumbags. Am I wrong to be angry about this?

Why do the authorities build bikepaths through scumsville anyway? I'll answer that: the build them there because they have this fantasy that the people who are being housed there just need to be "understood" and to be given a few "good breaks". The reality is that a good twenty percent of the people who live in these schemes are trash, genetic refuse that could best help the world by having their fatal drug overdose, lengthy period of incarceration, before they breed the next generation of Darens and Kylies instead of after.

Ouch, sorry to hear about your crash. If I recall correctly that was the exact same place where my branch throwers were . The other side of town is not much better where the path goes through Drylaw. I've heard some nasty stories about there but touch wood the worst I have had is eggs thrown at me by neds with a bad aim, the following cyclist wasn't so lucky though .

Last week somewhere near Northampton a scrote with an air gun was taking pot shots at cyclists and joggers on a cycle path .

Yep indeed feral kids and they seem to breed at a shockingly earlier age each year.

If anyone came at me with a branch and shoved it through my wheels causing me to go over the bars I would beat them senseless with the branch even if they were a kid - a good sound thrashing something the parents should already given the kid. If that is the response you got from the police I would complain to the Chief Constable and if no joy the IPCC. Those lazy coppers aren't fit to be coppers. A serious assault has been committed against you and they have a duty to investigate it fully whether they feel like it or not. Contact the local authority to get the cycle path cleaned up, otherwise you will be contacting them when you damage your tyres or mysteriously cut yourself. Get your jabs up to date particularly Hepatitis if it is a druggie enclave. Carry a camera and fully charged mobile to call 999 if you have to and both at the ready just in case.

Anyway the cops are on notice now so if something subsequently happens you can say I previously reported it but the police did FA.

Hi crankarm! In fairness to the police they did respond very quickly and came to see me shortly afterwards. They did investigate the incident and did express their intention to follow it up, I think that they were just realistically explaining the likely outcome.

I'm not too happy about the incident, but I'm not sure if it technically qualifies as an assault? I'd be interested to know my options in terms of writing to my local council or MP.

Helmet camera.

It would catch anything like this on video. Then just hand the video over to the police. I have a feeling that the police would be able to recognise the little scrota.

That sounds really quite worrying Cedric. I know the path as I have occasionally used it on the return to town on the club rides. I think that is the one the leads to the innocent path. Although, I must admit that I do not like it as there is frequently broken glass scattered over the path. I think I will avoid this route in future.

I used to commute along the path that heads parallel with the Queensferry Road heading out toward Barnton and would occasionally come across feral children.

I'm pretty glad I'm no longer using the paths I used to use when I came to work on the MTB. Summer and the local inbred pond-life used to go hand in hand with abuse, attemped assaults and the like.

The hairiest experience was when they were lobbing glass bottles off one of the bridges over the path at passing cyclists.

Hmmm... that's pretty worrying. I've never cycled along there but frequently use it as one of my running routes. To be honest, I've never had any problems there. Mind you, I'm usually only there on Sunday mornings and these wee neds are generally nocturnal.

Ah the joys of cycling past Craigmiller/Niddrie, used that path a few times recently and was surprised how little glass there was, wouldn't want to use it in the evenings though...
