England v Germany

Footballing rope-a-dope? For 50 minutes I was wondering why Germany could be anybody's favourite for the World Cup. A very ordinary looking side, little or no enthusiasm. 2 goals that told England fans what they already knew; that England's defence was ropey. An inexperienced pairing in central defence and a right back that is a midfielder and goes walkabout.

Germany were sitting deep and looked to be struggling under wave upon wave of England attacks. England committed men forward in search of (another) equaliser. Terry goes up for a corner, possession is lost, Germany break, 3-1.

Then I figured I might have been suckered too. At 4-1, Germany pushed up and played in the England half. We were almost treated to exhibition football as England players chased and Germany played keep ball.

Game won, Germany made their subs to rest players for the next match. But the team looked more positive for it. But for a lazy pass, it would have been 5-1. England's substitutions made no difference. The forwards were deprived of possession and team work disintegrated. Solo efforts and pop shots ensued.

To England's credit, they tried. There was no shortage of effort. Sadly for England, it's goals that win games. The score line for me reflecting the difference in class. England, spirited but naive. Germany showed how to ride the punches, draw the opponent out and strike decisively when the space presented itself. Perhaps not a master class but enough to convincingly beat England.

Bring on Harry Redknap. I am, and always will be a Spurs fan and although i would be very sad to see him leave Spurs, He has surely got to be given the England job.
Yes i know there was a goal that wasn,t given, But we were given a bloody good hiding.
At least Harry has got the balls to make changes. And as for a sack of potatoes in place of Defoe when he can,t even make the premiership ?

It's just hard to, there are lots of disappointed people around, i'll get over it soon but this shift at work is going to be horrible.

Have to say, Well done David James, he was the best player for England today. Big fan of him, in his last chance to play in a major major competition.

i do care, I'm as patriotic as the next englishman, but it tickles me how the media etc. build us all up for this amazing 1966 reincarnation.
Everyone flies the flag, everyone supports the national team 100%,
the pundits give us every 'what if' and 'best case scenario' despite the FACTS and then we're all p***d off when the fottballing elite fail to deliver.... the truth is that our national team is NOT good enough - nowhere near good enough !

really, that's what annoys me - the money involved and the lack of skill reflected in the side chosen to represent us.

Then when you see a disallowed goal as we witnessed (despite the final outcome) - where is the spirit of fair play within the game - blatant cheating . . . . . as is using epo etc by pro cyclists - the rub is that I AM THE ONE WHO IS BEING CHEATED !, and we all are !

Condolences to all who follow the footie and must be devastated by our defeat.

Hopefully we'll have some pride and enjoyment watching Brad Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, and some of the other British riders in the TdF. Armstrong v. Contador should be interesting as well. Bring it on!

Nice post...I think you are right about England being hyped of for being better than they actually are.I must say I didn't expect us to get as outplayed as we obviously did but I didn't think we would win.

Look how we started off...we were so bad in the other games it was shocking.Apart from Slovakia where we were a bit better.

I know the disappointment...I don't think I will ever forget 1990.
