Agreed. It's a case of doing one's own sums to reflect the particular circumstances. In our case what works best* is a 24-7 low rate tariff rather than an overnight EV/E7/E10 tariff with a fast charger, but I do the maths every quarter to check. If I had a more consumptive EV, or did more than the roughly 10k mile pa, then the equation would change, I'm sure.

My granny does 2.3 kw per hour, so it'd be 14 kWh, meaning 50 miles or so for the 6 cheap hours.

*Meaning the lowest aggregate overall electricity bill pcm for our household, incl EV

Need wall charger then or be screwed with a granny charger. I know people with granny charger don’t know how they live like that. Don’t do many miles I suppose. Still if you need extra journeys then you have to wait. Wouldn’t put myself in that position.

Like most car owners, my car spends 95% of its life parked on my driveway. That’s more than enough opportunity to keep the car in a state of charge that covers all my needs. (And I exclusively use a granny charger.)

I had an external socket 👇 fitted in the front porch for £140, including parts. It’s a doddle to plug the car in overnight whenever it needs a boost.

Theoretical question relating to my Niro’s 12V battery: could I use a smart chart charger to keep that at a healthy state of charge? And if so, could it be done in situ or would the battery need to be removed?

(I know charging the car does that and the car’s battery management looks after it when driving etc. Just humour me…)

This is what I’d do but a fast wall charger may end up been thrown in with the deal so no £140 granny & no £1000 to sparky for a fasty.

We've done 70-odd miles today, maybe a few more. Granny got plugged in at 4pm and she reckons she'll have the i3 to 100%* at about 00.30 or so.

*i3s always charge to 100% due to exceptional battery management software and a good deal of battery headroom out of the factory. In fact cell balancing doesn't take place until there's a 100% charge, so it's important to charge to full capacity regularly.

Quick question? Some people don’t have a fast charger fitted to their house wall. (£1000).
They manage with a slow 230-240v trickle charger. How easy is it to manage without the fast wall charger, driving 50 miles a day in a Cupra born EV.

You will get between 7-10 miles per hour from 3 pin plug charger.

Assuming worst case 7 miles per hour, you will get plenty of charge if you started charging as soon as you got home.

You obviously won't get all of charge on cheap overnight rates.

This is why most EV owners upgrade to 7kW chargers to get the required range within the cheap electricity rates around midnight till 5am

£1000 seems a bit steep for a home charger.
This place has them from £331, but there is installation on top. Mine was quite easy as the distribution box was in the garage, and the charger was placed on the outside wall of the same. You used to be able to get a grant to help out with the costs, as long as you can prove you have an electric car (V5 will do).

Apparantly, in Leicester you can currently buy a new Dacia Spring city car for under 10 grand !
I say 'apparantiy' the Car Wow price looking suspect. Could be marketing to snare you.
The Leapmotor T03 looks far better at the budget end.

My first EV charger was completely free. A straight job, with extra breaker in garage consumer unit.

Since then I've paid for mine and the kids Evs charger points, each getting more expensive than the last, due to complexity of installation

It's either the Spring, or herpes, and herpes is more expensive, notwithstanding its greater desirability 🤭
