Saw for the first time last night a repeat of the Grand Designs episode on the Art Deco house in Guildford, here: http://www.channel4.com/4homes/on-t...uildford-the-art-deco-house-08-06-06_p_1.html

Here's our best-loved example in west London, the Hoover factory:

I was fascinated by the Grand Designs house, it looks fabulous even though the proportions and style are taken straight from the 1930s. The point about this is that this style looks modern even today. There are plenty of other designs, which still look as good as the day they were created, for example I have six Bauhaus chairs, designed in around 1930:

1928.jpg

And we have a Le Corbusier recliner or chaise longue, designed in 1928:

And an example nearer to my own job, Chanel V perfume, designed.... when do you think? Designed in 1921 and still in the world top 10 selling perfumes:

The odour is absolutley classic, the first aldehydic floral and this type went on to become an important line in the "family tree" of perfumes. Even your Lux and Camay toilet soaps are descended from Chanel V. Meanwhile the bottle design and the whole image of the perfume still look contemporary.

What else do you know of, that is old but still looks "up to the minute"?

The classic British phone box. (I'm not clever enough to be able to post a photograph - perhaps somebody would care to oblige?)

And the letter box too.

I'm happy to post your pictures, but I wonder if these designs endured?

Here, you'll like this one:

This is the box in Manchester that survived the bomb - see the brass plaque? The mail inside it was delivered intact and apparently nowadays some people travel miles to post here for safe delivery!

This building reminded me of a very similar building close to where I used to live. Lovely building which has been renovated recently to a good standard.

In fact I've just noticed that both buildings were designed by the same man, Thomas Wallis. Well there you go!

I love that India of Inchinnan building! What is it about the proportions that make it so pleasing to the eye?

Aye it is a nice building.

For many years it lay in ruin and burnt out. Then a technology firm came along and renovated it (added some more modern sections at the back). They did a good job. It's also open to the public as it has a restaurant in, which is nice.

To me any car built by Morgan is a real example of enduring good design, the classic models have hardly changed in looks over 60 years, and the modern ones will still look fantastic in another 100 years.

All of the those buildings make me think I'm watching Poirot.
