I think the hippies could both be proud and penniless, and look down on the people who have sold out to "the man".

Just remembered a homeless guy locally who said he was proud that he had nothing, owed nothing and asked for nothing, unlike us "ants" with our mortgages, homes and families.

I know it was probably necessary bravado.

Not much inverted snobbery in the few golf clubs I've been too.

My golf club specialises in Royals, Masons and the life peers, so are very humble. They even let a few Labour voters work as waiters in the clubhouse, which seems particularly enlightened to me.

One of my now-ex next-door neighbours asked me to move my old Saab 9000 before a house viewing, as it would make the street look bad. I didn't care; it had well over 200hp, cost under £500 and was brilliant.
