At risk of continuing the nerd discussion... oddly enough the reason I head for that space at peak commuting time is because I can usually find a space there. And particularlly useful when smugly carrying the afforementioned Bromton. Maybe it is something to do with which coaches people tend to get on at Reading and Didcot.

Careful, Jonesy - the smug-o-meter is off the scale... But now that you mention getting on the train, WTF is it with the announcements? First of all I would like to welcome customers who might have joined the service at Port Talbot Parkway? FFS. And we all know what buffets sell. It won't be long before the announcements are so long that we'll be at the next station before they end. Sorry - station stop. I think this rant might have taken me off topic...

Ok, I suppose it only "endured" until the late 1960s, but has anyone ever seen anything which combines form and function so perfectly?

I'm an OVS Bulleid man, myself...

(there will now be a long and bloody trainspotter war, forcing a referral to room 101...)

Then there's the safety announcement with 'important information' that is 'also available in Braile uppon request from the guard', ffs... it annoys me every day. A fine example of the worst kind of arse-covering application of H&S, no discernable benefit, time wasted, passegers learn to switch off from long, tedious repetitive announcements and so won't be listening the one time there is something important to say.

Christ yes. There was a great Scenes You Seldom See in the Eye, with someone saying to his companion, "'scuse me - I'm just going to take a moment to read the information on the safety card adjacent to my seat."
