Fat bikes ?

I've seen quite a few people on them now in a variety of situations, as well as the pictures posted by djb and johnclimber. They seem to me to be a great all round adventure bike. I still need to go hire one from the LBS and try one out.

I think they would be brilliant fun. Just wish my beach was a sandy one, don't fancy trying to climb 10ft of shingle:ohmy:

....I can appreciate horses for courses, ie sand and snow, and very rough terrain, but would you buy one to solely ride on tarmac?
It's a genuine question, and stems from living in this part of the world. Cycling has become very popular here in recent years, and I often see groups out on spotlessly clean MTB's, riding along busy paved roads, very expensive bikes, lycra head to toe, and amongst them the occasional fat bike. People round here are given to ostentation, and this seems to be another outlet for them to flaunt their affluence. No real issue with any of this, just strikes me as odd why people choose to ride the wrong horse for a particular course..................

I don't tell anyone what bike to ride and I don't expect people to tell me what bike I should be riding. If someone wants to ride one on tarmac that's their choice. Maybe the people on very clean mtbs are just out for a pootle and their bike was filthy the day before, I don't care if they're in baggies or lycra. maybe people can only afford one bike so they have no decision on which bike to ride today.

Bikes have two wheels and can be ridden anywhere, they may not do the job as well as another but it's only a bike, maybe just a different shape or style.

I couldn't care a toss what people ride, more people on bikes is a good thing.

If you were to try and convince someone what would you say were the major plus points? (Apart from taking you to all those nice places that you keep posting photos from)

I wouldn't say planted but they grip. The correct tyres and pressures make the bike feel just right. Incorrect pressure will make the bike bounce on the tyres. They climb well too, right gearing with wide tyres give brilliant traction.

Grip on a lumpy trail sounds good to me.

The new 650b+ tyres are mini-fatties.

I suppose they could either be the best of both worlds, or the worst.
