Are they different from just standard tyre levers?

As an update, I took them round to a friends house and he very kindly fitted them for me with the aid of a lot of cable ties, so think I'll invest in some cable ties and perhaps this tyre lever.

Yes, the idea of the VAR lever shown in the link is that you hook the, err, hook over the bead of the tyre and place the forked end onto the opposite rim, straddling the tyre. You can then lift the as yet uninstalled tyre bead up and over the rim and into its rightful place. Sounds a lot harder than it is.

^ this - the instructions make it clear. Can also be used as a pair of 'normal style' tyre levers. Takes up just a bit more room in your saddlepack than normal ones.
