We have been very lucky and had a bit of Sods law in both directions. Our electric circuits blew on Saturday before the floods started. Got that down to the kettle and replaced it but that circuit was still out, so stopped using it. On Monday, as expected sparkies were flat out, we did not want to take anyone away from jobs in Carlisle but I did get through to a 0800 number. Yes, they could get me an electrician, they required a £99 fee over the phone from a debit card. That would get me one hours work; all other time would be at premium rates and paid in advance parts would be extra paid by card in advance. I said thank you, but no thank you. We can do without the fridge and microwave for the immediate future. On Wednesday, I saw a sparkie in one of the villages. It turned out that he was an ex-boyfriend of the daughter (the last time I had seen him I had turfed him and four of his mates out of the house at 02:00 when they brought the daughter and wrote off Micra home). He came round to see us checked the fridge (18 years old) undone the freezer part of it. And on came the circuit, price old memories and a pint when I see him again, faith in human nature restored again. I will be around to see another of his mates today to get a new fridge freezer.
Just came back from Kendal and walked through some of the worst affected areas - very sad & depressing seeing all the household stuff on the streets.
Lots of tradesmen vans everywhere and I did think that this will be a bonanza for the rip-off merchants.
Not tarring everyone with this brush but we have a few tales from the last time properties were flooded and storm damaged here that are beyond belief.
From Facebook:Aye... a generator is a finite source. Meanwhile, the council don't seem to think that it might be a good idea to turn off all the decorative Xmas lights throughout town until the mains power is up and running.
Where are the worst bits of Kendal? I used to live on Stricklandgate which is quite high so presumably unaffected.
My brothers at my mothers atm, where he lives in lancaster the underground parking is flooded so no power and as the uni is now shut he can work from home atm until he can return. No Idea about the Borders... but many traffic lights have been switched off in Lancaster and Morecambe all week "for safety reasons" .... traffic seems to be flowing well, no one has been killed or injured to my knowledge, so i'm wondering if it's worth turning them back on.
