Sorry a bit OT but seeing as we are doing cows at the moment and it is in 'CC Chat' not the serious bit of the forum:

Some years ago at the local Porsche dealership in Kendal (yes, we can do posh here in the North) there was a cow incident.

One escaped from the old Auction Mart around 100m from the dealership and crossed two roads to arrive there.

It then followed a slope adjacent to the main showroom that took it to the rear of said area but at roof level.

The poor thing stepped onto the roof and went straight through into the showroom - it had to be euthanised.

We have been very lucky and had a bit of Sods law in both directions. Our electric circuits blew on Saturday before the floods started. Got that down to the kettle and replaced it but that circuit was still out, so stopped using it. On Monday, as expected sparkies were flat out, we did not want to take anyone away from jobs in Carlisle but I did get through to a 0800 number. Yes, they could get me an electrician, they required a £99 fee over the phone from a debit card. That would get me one hours work; all other time would be at premium rates and paid in advance parts would be extra paid by card in advance. I said thank you, but no thank you. We can do without the fridge and microwave for the immediate future. On Wednesday, I saw a sparkie in one of the villages. It turned out that he was an ex-boyfriend of the daughter (the last time I had seen him I had turfed him and four of his mates out of the house at 02:00 when they brought the daughter and wrote off Micra home). He came round to see us checked the fridge (18 years old) undone the freezer part of it. And on came the circuit, price old memories and a pint when I see him again, faith in human nature restored again. I will be around to see another of his mates today to get a new fridge freezer.

Just came back from Kendal and walked through some of the worst affected areas - very sad & depressing seeing all the household stuff on the streets.

Lots of tradesmen vans everywhere and I did think that this will be a bonanza for the rip-off merchants.

Not tarring everyone with this brush but we have a few tales from the last time properties were flooded and storm damaged here that are beyond belief.

Where are the worst bits of Kendal? I used to live on Stricklandgate which is quite high so presumably unaffected.

Can't quite get streetview to see from the same place, but I think the above is taken from somewhere near the white buildings below, looking across the beck. If so, that is a truly horrendous amount of rubble that has been brought down by the water! I think we often tend to forget that it isn't just the water that's the problem, but all the stuff it brings with it. And the water must have been moving pretty fast to move those stones.

Castle Street and all the adjacent area inc' Wildman Street/Ann Street etc and up the Appleby Road almost as far as the van rental place. The new Giant store (formerly Askews) was badly affected but they are almost up & running again. Putting green and (Goose Green?) was flooded heavily and the wier just disappeared under the flow.

Mintsfleet Estate (Industrial & Residential) is a mess due to the Kent overflowing at Sandy Bottoms.

Aynam Road and adjacent streets eg Parr Street were badly hit (as per usual).

And all along the area where the free parking is (New Road) all the businesses opposite were badly affected.

The popular path around the Sheepmount in Carlisle has gone. That's both Hadrian's Cycleway and Hadrian's Wall National Trail both substantially severed. A colleague went to inspect it this morning and the photos are beyond belief.

I spent the day in an Army emergency control room and our military are simply amazing (along with all the emergency services and those working to sort out the mess)

What with one thing and another,I keep nipping in and out of this thread,so I may well have missed something, but has anyone been on from flooded areas outside Cumbria?Scottish Borders for example, forgive me if Ive missed anything, its simply that they seem to be forgotten to a degree.Any news anyone?

No Idea about the Borders... but many traffic lights have been switched off in Lancaster and Morecambe all week "for safety reasons" .... traffic seems to be flowing well, no one has been killed or injured to my knowledge, so i'm wondering if it's worth turning them back on.
