My Jetstream appears to have caught the 'last minute breakage' disease. Noticed a week or two back the DualDrive hub gear was playing up. Low range- fine. Overdrive- fine. 1:1 mode (yup, when it's just being a hub)- assorted clunking noises, feedback through the pedals....It went into the LBS today, early. Waited and waited for the call. Not a good sign.....£145 for a new one (plus fitting etc I imagine, took the call from the LBS at work, will get more info in the morning). Grrr....have already emailed SRAM's UK agent Fisher about this. Info about warranty etc is rather vague. Not certain of mileage, certainly less than 2k, and my pride-and-joy gets looked after properly. No way should the hub need replacing. Rather hacked off. Nearly bought a Spesh Tarmac on eBay the other day- now even more glad I cried off (nice bike, but apart from 'domestic issues'- i.e. 'what have you bought that for?' etc- I could have got a no-less-nice new bike for the price by the time I collected it and got it specced the way I wanted- it's standard rather than compact chainset, for one thing).
I am most definitely still on for Friday though...With any luck, replacement DD hub on bike by then. Will phone LBS in morning, get more info. If need be, and/or possible, I'll be on (a) My Cadenza, which needs its service, though nothing I couldn't put up with for a while (it runs fine, stops fine, just usual wear in drivetrain) - LBS naturally has no free space on books for this week, but they might squeeze me in in view of the circumstances or (;) Jetstream. Hub did work, just not in 1:1, so I'm hoping they could reassemble it as was, or get a substitute wheel (BMX one would do fine- bit less weight for Ditchling...).

Well if it rains, I'll be on a (misfiring) Cadenza too.

what is this, if it rains, if it rains you ride in the rain and your bike gets wet. Too many 'precious' folks don't want to get their nice bikes wet!!!!!!!!!

IT'S A BIKE IT'S MEANT O GET OUT IN THE WEATHER

if it can't handle it then you've bought a pup

BUT ITS CLEAN AND HAS NEVER SEEN RAIN BEFORE. Plus there's the small matter of mudguards (i.e. distinct lack of) and mudguard etiquette which is an entire post on its own. Plus I then have an excuse for not being able to get up any hills due to being on a clanker.

Update: Just popped into the LBS. The mechanic who looked at it last night wasn't in, but according to the owner it looked like wear and tear- after I said how little mileage I'd done on it, he agreed that I should have a decent case for coverage under warranty. He disagreed with the idea of hub gears having little or no maintenance needed (the manual actually says that the hubs are 'provided with permanent lubrication and maintenance-free under normal conditions')- he thinks (and I'm now inclined to agree, funnily enough) that they need a regular look at. Even Rohloff, makers of the practically bombproof Speedhub (as used by Mark Beaumont and James Bowthorpe for their round-the-world rides) say their hub needs oil-changes. Shame the SRAM people in Schweinfurt disagreed.....
Anyway, as assorted bits fell out on inspection, it would not be possible to return it to the way it was (which would have been fine for Friday). Have to hope Fisher manage (for once) to get a part out quickly. The somewhat clunky-at-the-moment Cadenza will do the job, though I might end up walking Ditchling (more weight, higher gearing).

There are so many reasons from the above tale of woe to ride fixed, the only thing to worry about breaking is your knee's!!

Me as a possible please Mr L.

Just waiting to see if I can find somewhere in London to have a few hours kip on Friday evening.

Ah, User - you've been quiet on these boards lately. I'll be crashing at a friend's in Norbury - it's not ideal for bike storage or a lot of space, but my host is generally very relaxed about having people crashing out all over the living room, and we'll be doing the same - if you don't get a better offer, or one nearer HPC, let me know and I'll ask her. As long as you don't have a trike .

Er, no thanks. I like the option of not pedalling downhill, or freewheeling coming up to a junction (as opposed to going over the bars....). I think you meant parts breaking on the bike, not necessarily the rider....!
