The Queen of Rides. We escape The Smoke on some quieter roads, and follow the river before diving under the Dartford Bridge and making our way to Gravesend. From that point on, the ride becomes ever more dream-like with quiet lanes and great views.

Refreshments are taken in Strood; wonderful home-made cakes and rolls from the staff of Step & Learn. After which we cross the Medway and head further east through Upchurch, over the atmospheric Raspberry Hill, and on to the ancient market town of Faversham. The road from Faversham to Whitstable runs across the Graveney Marshes, a delight that you can take at your own speed. We enjoy our breakfasts overlooking the sea.

A ride of 67 or so miles.

Not here it's not. Does your place of work get a bit draconian on yo' ass?

(Fancy a ride some time? I live closer to you these days.)
Yes, and yes. But am in Canadaland for much of August. Hence expect to be jet-lagged in Whitstable.

Last time I did it rock up at Whitstable station, deploy Mk1 winning smile and squeeze bike onto train where it will fit. Theoretically (IIRC) there's two bike spaces per 4 carriages, by the Tardis loo, but practically it's a game of bike tetris in any available lobby. There's an amount of leaping up and moving the bike from one side to the other as you progress to That London. No bike space booking is possible or required.

Mk II winning smile can also be deployed, and responded to with a literal nod and a wink, to persuade the ticket vendor of your group's eligibility for groupsave tickets despite two of its members confessing loudly and repeatedly that they weren't going all the way to Victoria. Needless to say at Vic no one checks/checked tickets if/when you go through the luggage gate.
